Study Tips for School Success

 *Encourage your child to study
 soon after school.  Most children
 have a difficult time concentrating
 in the evening.
*Create a study corner. Have
 plenty of supplies (pens, pencils,
 paper, etc.) on hand.
*Play learning games with your
 child.  Crossword puzzles,
 Scrabble,  and computer games
are fun and teach valuable skills.

Remembering key information can be difficult
but it is also a very important study skill.  Share
the AIR approach with your child to improve his
short- and long-term memory.

Attention.  Children are easily distracted by
TV and conversations among family members.
Therefore, a calm and quiet spot is best for
studying.  The moment your child's mind begins to
wander during study time, encourage him to take
a short break.  Your child needs to focus on the
material in order to retain it.

Interest.  If your child is interested in a topic,
the more likely she is to remember the information-
and for a longer time.  Try to suggest ways for your
child to tie her studies to activities and hobbies she
enjoys.  For instance, if your child is learning
multiplication table, she could phrase the problems
in soccer terms.  Example:  "If two players each
kicked three balls into the net, how many goals
were scored?"

Rest.  Children have difficulty remembering
information when they are tired or fatigued.  Your
child should learn new material at a time of day
when he feels most alert.  A healthy snack and some
exercise can give your child a boost.
